What are Illuminated Found Object Sculptures?

What is the motivation behind it?

This body of work reflects a deliberate life transition — a conscious choice to live more purposefully and authentically by placing creativity at the center of daily life. After decades spent advancing initiatives aimed at improving human wellbeing, I felt drawn toward a different form of contribution grounded not in data or systems, but in expression, reflection, and presence. I am continually drawn to objects that have been lost, tucked away, forgotten, or quietly dismissed; within them, I see narrative, endurance, and unrealized possibility. By reimagining and illuminating these materials, I bring them out of the shadows and into the light, allowing them to be experienced in ways they never were before. Light plays an essential role in this process, revealing texture, history, and imperfection while creating warmth and immediacy — resulting in works that function as both sculpture and atmosphere, transforming the spaces they inhabit. At its core, this practice is about attention: what we choose to see, what we restore, and what we value. In giving discarded objects renewed presence, I explore the idea that transformation is always possible — for materials, for perspectives, and for ourselves.

Steve Meersman is an artist whose work explores renewal, visibility, and the quiet power of transformation. After a distinguished career as a research scientist leading initiatives focused on improving healthcare access and advancing equity for underserved populations, Meersman made a deliberate transition toward a life centered on creativity and artful living.

His artistic practice reflects the same underlying ethos that guided his scientific work — a commitment to seeing what others might overlook and bringing forward what deserves greater recognition.

Working primarily with found objects, Meersman creates illuminated sculptural assemblages that reclaim materials often forgotten, discarded, or undervalued. Through thoughtful composition and the interplay of light, his pieces invite viewers to reconsider the histories embedded within everyday objects and to experience them in new and unexpected ways.

Meersman’s work lives at the intersection of precision and intuition, structure and imagination — transforming the overlooked into something resonant, contemplative, and alive.
